E-commerce important next step for exporters
3 Apr 2009

Vietnam introduces business opportunities in US E-commerce is a useful tool and innovative new direction for Vietnamese businesses in penetrating the US market amid the world economic crisis, said Vu Tien Loc, President of the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Speaking at a seminar in Hanoi on April 2, Loc emphasised enterprises’ role in speeding up e-commerce implementation and turning it into an effective method in import-export activities.

According to Nguyen Duy Khien, Head of the American Department under the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MOIT), the US is massive, diversified, and selective market.

At present, Vietnam’s exports to the US account for 20 percent of the country’s total export turnover, but represent only 0.4 percent of the US’s total imports.

He asserted that Vietnamese businesses have more chances to penetrate the US market than Japan or Europe at this time.

Nguyen Thi Minh Huyen, Deputy Director of the MoIT’s E-commerce Development Centre, introduced the ministry’s portal on foreign markets to better provide Vietnamese exporters with market information on 190 countries and territories.

At the seminar, local businesses also had a chance to discuss with policymakers their challenges in applying e-commerce to their import-export activities.
