20-08-04 The Ministry of Industry has just completed the draft of the national strategy on energy development for the Prime Minister?s approval. Accordingly, Vietnam?s demand for petroleum products is expected to surge at the average rate of 9-10 %/year during 2005-2010. In detail, the demand will reach 13.4-14 mm tons of oil by 2010 and 25.4-28 mm tons of oil by 2020. Also, energy consumption ratio will increase to 42 % by 2020 and 52-53 % by 2050; power consumption ratio will increase from 21 % in 2003 to 34 % by 2020 while coal consumption ratio will reduce from 51 % to 26 %.
Vietnam will spend around $ 78.5 bn in energy development in the 2002-2020 period. Of the number, $ 36.9 bn will be spent from now till 2010, accounting for 5-6 % of GDP. Electricity development will make up 4 % of GDP by 2010 and 2.5 % by 2020. Oil and gas will occupy 3-4 % by 2010 and 1.7-2 % 10 years later while coal production will make up 0.2 %.
With this strategy, Vietnam will turn from an energy exporter to energy importer. The country will import 25-7 % its total energy demand by 2020 and 57-62 % by 2050 (excluding nuclear power). The figures will become much bigger if Vietnam energy sector fails to carry out effective method to balance energy supply and demand. The Ministry of Industry has attached importance to energy saving and effective usage in terms of energy development. Thus, Vietnam can meet increasing energy demand of the national economy as well as well protect the environment and achieve sustainable socio-economic development. |
